Sherfield wants to make immediate impact

Athletic Trent Sherfield of Danville High School (Danville, Ill.) signed with Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Look inside for a photo and quotes from Sherfield.

"It went really well," said Sherfield on signing with the Commodores. "I wasn't able to sign at my school because of the weather so we had my event at a local Junior College. A lot of people from around the community came by to show their support.

"When I gave my initial commitment to Vanderbilt it was half to James Franklin and half to the school itself and the academics. Once I talked on the phone with Coach Mason and then met the rest of the coaching staff, it sealed it for me. They're a tremendous group of coaches and I feel like Vanderbilt is my home.

"Coach Franklin liked me at wide receiver, but I've been talking to Coach Mason about playing in the secondary. That's fine with me if Coach Mason wants me there. He does an incredible job. He's coached defensive backs in the NFL and knows what it takes to get there. I'm coming in this summer ready to play. I want to make a big impact as a freshman and make All-SEC Freshman of the Week one week."

Sherfield became a starter in his freshman season at Danville in eastern Illinois. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounds athlete was named first team All-Area and All-State honorable mention as a senior for the Vikings.
