QB Travis Waller talks Vandy offer

Vanderbilt is looking west to find the right signal caller to add to this year's recruiting class. Last Monday, Karl Dorrell was in Anaheim, Calif. scouting Servite High School's Travis Waller. Apparently, he liked what he saw as Waller told VandyMania.com he now has a tenth D-1 offer, this one from the Commodores.

"I actually wasn't at school on Monday when Coach Dorrell was there," Waller explained. "He sat down with my head coach and watched video of me throwing to wide receivers. I called him the following day and said he definitely thought I'd be a good fit in their offense. They see me as a big-time game-changer type of player. He said he thinks I can turn into one of the best duel-threat quarterbacks in football.

"I liked the offer quite a lot. My mother and I know all about the high academics Vanderbilt has and I'm a big academic guy. I want to learn more about the university and develop a good relationship with Coach Dorrell."

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback threw for 1,670 yards and 12 touchdowns and ran for 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013. He was named Offensive MVP of his League and took All-County and All-Area honors.

Waller has offers from the Pac-12 (Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Washington), the Big Ten (Northwestern, Penn State), and the SEC (Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt). He also holds an offer from BYU.

"I think by June or July I'm going to be ready to make my decision," he said. "I think a big part of my decision will be how my relationships develops with the coaches. Like which ones have reached out to me the most, which have kept me the best informed about their school. I'll see how it goes on the visits and how I feel like I will fit into the offense. The offers from the southeast or the east don't scare me off. Location isn't a factor for me as much as finding the right place. I'm open to all locations."

The Servite Friars went 6-6 a year ago. They return 17 starters this season including Waller's favorite target, Equanimeous St. Brown, who Vanderbilt has also offered.
