2016 lineman hearing from Vanderbilt

Matthew Hunt has been noticed by Vanderbilt coaches after a notable sophomore season at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardstown, Md. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman was chosen as an All-State performer in 2013 among all Maryland classifications and is looking forward to September 1st when coaches can begin to contact juniors. Hunt spoke with VandyMania.com on where he stands with recruiting.

Matthew Hunt Bio

"I went to camps at UNC, N.C. State, and UVa," Hunt said. "I definitely think I performed well especially at N.C. State and UVa. It was a chance to get in front of the coaches and have them see what I can do in person. I brought a lot of energy and intensity to camps. During the one-on-one drills at UVa, the offensive line coach kept asking for my name. He said he though I had a good punch and a good first step.

"With Vanderbilt, I've been hearing a lot from them in the way of letters in the mail. They've asked for my sophomore transcripts. They're evaluating my film and looking at my grades. I haven't talked to anyone [from Vanderbilt] yet but come September 1st, I think they'll contact me, without a doubt. I'm excited to talk to the coaches and start building a relationship with them."

Last season was Hunt's first at St. Mary's Ryken. He played right tackle and nose guard and was selected for All-State honors for offense. Hunt said this year he'll likely transition to guard where he's projected to play in college.

"I can't wait to get started to be honest," Hunt said on the upcoming season. "We have a lot of starters returning like our running back Damien Jones, our cornerback Jesse Stauffer, and Jessiah Rojas at safety. Those guys are in the Class of '16 as well and getting a lot of D-1 looks. It should be fun."

St. Mary's Ryken High School is in the Washington, D.C. area about 55 miles south of the nation's capital. The school competes in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. The Knights put up an 8-2 record in 2013 and finished the season on a three-game winning streak.
