VU WBB: Dores fall to Dayton 71-67

In the last game before the Christmas break, the Dayton Flyers played the Grinch as they handed the Commodores their second consecutive loss.

With Marqu'es Webb and Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau still sidelined, Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb used her sixth starting lineup of the season.

Junior Heather Bowe made her first start since returning to the team at the end of the fall semester and once again was a major contributor with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Rachel Bell returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the first game of the season. Morgan Batey started in the point guard position, and Kristen Gaffney and Rebekah Dahlman completed the starting lineup. In the revamped lineup

Whether it was the change in the lineup or being back home after two games on the road, Vanderbilt started the game strong, quickly building an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play.

But the magic didn't last as Dayton started chipping away at the lead. The Flyers tied the game at 12-12 with 12:43 left in the first half and took their first lead of the game at 17-15 a few minutes later.

From that point on, as it turned out, the Flyers would never lose that lead. But the game was a dogfight, with Vanderbilt nipping at the Flyers' heels yet never able to regain the upper hand.

At halftime the Dores trailed the Flyers 31-27. Before the midpoint of the second half, Dayton extended their lead to nine points, their biggest lead of the game. Then, with the Flyers leading 46-37 with 11:45 left in the game, an 8-0 Vanderbilt run cut the lead to one point at 48-47. A minute later the Dores tied the game.

Repeatedly Vanderbilt threatened to take over the lead, but every time, the Flyers held them off. The last best chance for the Dores came with two minutes left in the game, when a jumper by Batey brought Vanderbilt to within one point at 59-58. But that's as good as it got. In the end, the Dores were forced to foul, and unfortunately for Vanderbilt, the Flyers made their free throws, sealing the 71-67 victory.

With the loss Vanderbilt falls to 7-4 for the season. Next the team will take a few days break for the Christmas holidays, returning to action on Monday night December 29 when they host James Madison at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on the SEC Network-Plus.
