The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman has made four trips to campus in the past year and committed to Derek Mason on January 18th, 2015, on an official visit.

"The Vanderbilt coaches continued to evaluate my film and love how well I keep improving. They told me they can see the improvement in every single game I played this year. They're most impressed with my ability to finish blocks, just staying after it until the whistle blows. Coach Mason told me I remind him a lot of Jonathan Martin, who was on his team at Stanford.

"I went into the visit with the mindset that if the offer to grayshirt was upgraded, then I would commit. I was and I did. I'll be enrolling at Vanderbilt in June."

After missing his junior season due to a foot injury, Southers rebounded strong for the Seton Hall Prep Pirates at left tackle with 83 pancake blocks and was voted second team All-State to re-energize his offer list., which included Connecticut, Fordham, Harvard, UMass, Monmouth, ODU, Rutgers, Temple, Vanderbilt, and Yale.

"I think this is a very strong recruiting class to be a part of. There's some good talent that's going to be arriving this summer so I feel the future of Vanderbilt football is bright.

"I'm excited to play for Coach (Keven) Lightner. He thinks I have a high ceiling and wants to keep me at offensive tackle which is where I want to be. I think Coach (Andy) Ludwig was a good hire. Absolutely. You look at all he accomplished while he was at Wisconsin and it definitely gets you excited to play in his offense."

Jared is the son of Virginia and David Southers. He has an older sister, Arianna. Top Stories
