Florida Adds Vandy Transfer Josh Grady

Well, it seems like there is one team in the SEC which is in even worse shape than the Commodores when it comes to their options at quarterback this fall.

The Florida Gators announced the signing of Vanderbilt graduate transfer Josh Grady earlier this week in a bid to give them some much needed depth at the quarterback position. Grady is a smart player, and a decent athlete, but when you are adding a quarterback who finished his Vandy career 3-of-7 passing for 27 yards, then there has to be some serious questions asked into your quarterback recruitment policy.

The problem that the Gators have is that there are just two scholarship quarterbacks on their roster, sophomore Treon Harris and redshirt freshman Will Grier. Part of the reason for this is that the heavily recruited, and once much coveted, Skyler Mornhinweg recently transferred out of the program to Columbia.

Grady will likely be fighting with walk-on Jacob Guy for the number three spot on the Gators quarterback depth chart. The fact that a program with the resources and pulling power of Florida faces a battle between a walk-on and a three completion graduate student for their third string spot is a little mind blowing. This problem could be alleviated if much prized transfer Everett Golson were to choose Florida after his visit there this week, but that looks to be a long shot at best for the Gators.

Grady was once a high school star at Seffner Armwood where he threw for 49 touchdowns over two seasons. A legitimate dual threat on the field, Grady accounted for 38 total touchdowns as a senior (24 passing, 14 rushing) as the school reached the 4A state finals. His career at Vanderbilt however never really got going as Grady seemed unable to pinpoint his best position. He flipped from quarterback to wide receiver on multiple occasions, never quite being good enough at either spot to see extended playing time.

It will be very interesting to see what the transfer to Florida does for Grady. As the third quarterback he would never be more than two snaps away from playing time. With all the trouble Vandy had nailing down a starter at quarterback last year it would me more than a little ironic if Grady finds a way to excel at the position in Gainesville.
