Cockrell is a fast rising tight end from the Peach State that camped with Vandy a few weeks ago and impressed the Commodores coaching staff enough to land an offer.
Up to this point, Cockrell has landed offers from Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, Air Force, Buffalo, East Carolina, Elon, Mercer, UT Martin and others with the Commodores, Panthers and Bears standing out.
The 3-star tight end camped this past weekend at Yale and while he is enjoying his recruiting process, Cockrell did admit to have a team in the lead along with the possibility of making a college commitment sooner than later.
“I feel good about where everything sits with my recruitment but I have to admit I really like Vanderbilt and right now they are the number one school on my list,” he said. “I love a lot about Vanderbilt and I really enjoyed my time with them when I camped up there a few weeks ago. The coaches are awesome and the academic side of things really appeal to me. I have always thought about committing before the year starts and now having the Vandy offer, I am definitely serious about committing before the start of my football season.”
Standing 6’5 205 lbs, Cockrell is still looked at as project with his thin body and overall skill set. What does make him appealing is his natural pass catching abilities and overall athleticism.
Cockrell has the frame to grow into a formidable weapon at tight end. He displayed those skills at the Vandy camp and the VU staff itself was immediately impressed with his work ethic and potential on the field.
“My time at camp with Vandy really showed me how good I could be and the coaching I received there was top notch. The coaches really liked how I performed and even told me I showed them everything they needed to see to become an SEC tight end. I appreciated the compliments and it’s made me want to keep working hard to show everyone my talents. I have a long way to go but I believe in my abilities and I know I can get there with hard work.”
Cockrell is still garnering attention from other schools. His stock could continue to rise but once he commits somewhere, he plans to shut down his recruitment.
“I am a loyal guy so once I give my commitment to someone, I will remain solid with my word,” said Cockrell. “I do appreciate the attention and I’m continuing to talk with more and more schools. It’s a fun process to go through but I would prefer to get it over with so I can focus on school and my football season.”
Other programs could very well offer Cockrell within this month but they need to jump into the fold soon as the 3-star tight end could be close to choosing the school from Nashville, Tennessee.
