Austin Peay hires Julian Terrell

Two-time Commodores captain Julian Terrell has advanced his coaching career by moving just an hour down the road and taking an assistant coaching position at Austin Peay for next season. Terrell had a playing career which took him all over the world and he established a reputation quickly over the last two seasons as Vanderbilt’s director of video operations.

As is so often the case with these local hires, Terrell will get to see Vanderbilt up close and personal from the opposite sideline in November when Austin Peay travel down the road to take on the ‘Dores at Memorial Gym.

“I am happy where I am at – I am looking forward to taking that next step in my coaching career – and I will embrace that,” Terrell said in a release from the Austin Peay athletics department. "I have walked into (Memorial Gym) many times for games but to walk in there as an opponent, to be on the opposite sideline will be different – it will be an exciting experience.

To say that Terrell had a pro career that was off the beaten path doesn’t even get close to explaining his personal basketball journey after he left Nashville. Over a seven-year professional career Terrell signed with clubs in as places as diverse as Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Kosovo. Kosovo was his last destination and he spent five months playing for Sigal Prishtina, reaching the Kosovo finals before losing in three games. Two months after that adventure ended Terrell returned to Nashville under Kevin Stallings.

“Julian is a very bright young man with a solid basketball background," Austin Peay coach Dave Loos said. "The fact he played for and worked for Kevin Stallings and his staff at Vanderbilt was very attractive to me. He comes highly recommended.

“His background certainly indicates he will have an immediate impact with our post players but Julian will be involved in all aspects for us.”

Terrell’s background does make him an interesting hire. You have to wonder what relationships he forged on his travels and don’t be shocked if Austin Peay suddenly sees an influx of tall Eastern Europeans on their roster. With the sport being such a world game in 2015, and with Vandy playing Austin Peay regularly, it will be interesting to see how their roster demographics change while Terrell is on the staff.
