Three Keys: Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky

The Vanderbilt Commodores host the Kentucky Wildcats in an important SEC matchup on Saturday in Nashville. Here are your three keys to a victory over the Wildcats.

Key No. 1  Put the boom on Boom

Stanley "Boom" Williams is the oil that makes the Kentucky offensive machine go.  Last week UK scored just three points without him. However, he's back in the lineup this week as the Wildcats face a must win game against the Commodores.  The Vandy Black Death defense needs to do its thing and make for a harsh welcome for Boom. Rough him up within the rules and make him look forward to the game being over.

Key No. 2 Winning ugly can be fun

Last week the Vanderbilt offense passed sparingly while mostly staying on the ground in the close loss to Florida.  While the team didn't pull off a win, the plan nearly worked. This week the Commodores face a Wildcat team that is 97th in rushing defense and 58th in pass defense. Those stats provide a clear basis for again following last week's plan of running most of the time and passing very little.  By keeping the ball on the ground Vandy can again avoid the costly turnovers that have haunted the team throughout the season.

Key No. 3  Play clean football

Dumb penalties and turnovers negate the hard work done by your own team and allow opponents opportunities to wreck your season. The team should not get caught up in the fact they are a two point favorite.  Two points is nothing and one mistake or carelessness with the ball can turn that around. Play hard, smart and with fire but maintain your composure and good things can happen.
