Vanderbilt women's basketball preview: Tennessee-Martin

The Vanderbilt Commodore women return to the action on Monday as they host UT-Martin. Here is your preview of the Skyhawks.

UT-Martin has a solid basketball program and over the past four seasons has won either the OVC regular season or tournament championship.  The 7-4 Skyhawks started their season losing three of their first four games but are currently on a five-game winning streak. Some the games of interest for UT-Martin include a close road loss to a ranked Iowa team and a home blowout victory over Alabama.  Most recently the Skyhawks defeated Miami-Ohio at home and the Cincinnati Bearcats on the road.

Taking a look at UT-Martin's stats, you can see that Daijia Ruffin is the Skyhawk's top scorer.  The 5-foot-9 Ruffin, a redshirt freshman playing off the bench, scored 17 points in the close loss to Iowa.  Senior forward Haley Howard and junior guard Jessy Ward are the team's other double-digit scorers.

From the 3-point line Howard, Ward, and senior guard Katie Schubert, are the team's top threats.

Ruffin also leads the way in rebounds but interestingly, 5-11 senior guard Chelsea Roberts has almost as many rebounds as Ruffin and leads the team in assists.

Looking at the Vandy-UT-Martin stats comparison, the 'Dores lead the way in nearly every category except free throw shooting percentage, assists, turnovers per game, blocked shots and RPI.

Overall, UT-Martin looks like a dangerous opponent that the Commodores had better be ready to play.

Monday's game tips off at noon and can be seen on the SEC Network plus.
