Vanderbilt Commodores Basketball Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide

The 9-7 Vanderbilt Commodores will go for their second straight conference win on Saturday when they host Alabama at Memorial Gym. Here is your preview of the game.

10-5 Alabama had a challenging pre-conference schedule with six road games. The Tide came away with wins at Notre Dame, Clemson,  Wichita State and Southern Miss. Bama has played two opponents that Vandy has faced.  The Tide was blown out at Dayton but on Tuesday handled a South Carolina team that beat Vandy.

Looking at the Alabama statistical leaders, the Tide has three players that average in double-figures, led by guard Retin Obasohan who had just four points in the win over the Gamecocks.   Six-foot-8 forward Shannon Hale and guard Arthur Edwards also average in double figures.

Edwards leads the Crimson Tide with 31 made three-pointers while making nearly 50 percent of his attempts.

Bama has several other players that average between 30 and 40 percent from three. One player to watch is forward Riley Norris who made 8-of-11 from three-point range and finished with 27 points in the win over USC.  The Tide has four different players averaging over 50 percent in their attempts from the field.

Looking at some of the other Alabama statistical leaders, Obasohan also leads the team in steals with 24. Guard Justin Coleman has 58 assists. 6-foot-10, 248 pound forward Jimmie Taylor leads the team in rebounds.

Comparing Vandy and Bama statistically, we can see that Vandy scores more points and has shot the ball better. The Tide has slightly more steals and a stronger RPI.

This won't be an easy win despite Vandy' statistical edges.  The Commodores must be alert on defense for Norris and his teammates at the 3-point line. This is a home game and would be considered a quality win.  The Commodores have little room for more slip ups this season so they must execute properly and make plays.

Saturday's game tips off at 5 pm central time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
