College Basketball Recap: Vanderbilt Commodores 60, Florida Gators 59

The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Florida Gators 60-59 on Tuesday night at Memorial Gym.

Wade Baldwin IV fed a hungry Damian Jones to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

After a foul called on Jones and a Gator foul shot, a Florida tip in would give them their only lead of the night.

Jeff Roberson hit a pair of free throws to pull the 'Dores back ahead at 4-3.

After that, Baldwin IV found Matthew Fisher-Davis open for a 3-pointer to put Vandy up by four.

The Gators would climb back to tie the game at 7-7 before a dunk by Jones, who Florida was given a heavy dose of, as he had 13 first half points and five rebounds.

Baldwin IV hit a trey on his only attempt of the night and made 3-of-4 first half foul shots that gave Vanderbilt a comfortable 30-19 lead going into the half.

Commodore fans would get a scary case of déjà vu in the second half as they slowly watched their double-digit lead evaporate.

The Gators would narrow their deficit to eight after a layup but Roberson would answer back for the 'Dores to push the lead to 10.

Fisher-Davis nailed his second 3-pointer of the night and from there Jones and Baldwin IV would take over.

Vanderbilt would hold a 54-46 lead with 1:50 remaining after Jones hit a crucial pair of free throws.

Luke Kornet had a quiet night offensively but also drained a pair of must have foul shots down the line.  Kornet gave the Gators fits on the defensive end with six blocks on the night.

Florida hit two 3-point shots in the final eight seconds of the game but it was too little, too late as Baldwin IV would hit three of his remaining four free throws to give Vanderbilt what they needed for the victory.

Jones ended the night with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks for a double-double.

Baldwin IV had a team-high 24 points and was 9-for-14 from the free throw line.

Next up for the 'Dores is a trip to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns (13-7, 5-3) in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday, January 30th.
