Vanderbilt Basketball Preview: Mississippi State

The Vanderbilt Commodores travel to Starkville, Miss., on Tuesday night to face Mississippi State. Here is your preview of the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State has struggled through its season so far. The Bulldog's only wins in the conference have been over Ole Miss, Arkansas and Missouri, all at home.  Most recently State fell to Georgia on Saturday.

Six-foot-9, 260 pound forward Gavin Ware leads the Bulldogs in scoring.  In the recent home loss to Georgia Ware was held to just six points.  Three other players average in double figures for MSU.

Guard Malik Newman is the Bulldog's biggest threat from 3-point range, hitting nearly 40 percent of his attempts.  State has three other players who making over 34 percent of their three-pointers.  Ware is State's biggest threat from the field.

Six-foot-3 guard Craig Sword leads the Bulldogs in rebounding and blocked shots. Guard I.J. Ready is the top assist man for MSU. Another guard, Quinndary Weatherspoon, leads the team in steals.

This is a game that Vanderbilt can win but it won't be a cakewalk. The Bulldogs are usually very tough at home. Keep in mind they have beaten two teams that downed the Dores.  Keeping Newman in check along with not allowing the Bulldogs to go nuts from 3-point range, are the keys to winning this game.

Tuesday's game tips off at 8 pm central time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
