After the series started with a doubleheader on Thursday where both teams came away with 4-1 victories over each other, the 'Dores got a two-day break before the series conclusion on Sunday.
Vanderbilt jumped on top in the second inning after Alonzo Jones walked and Jason Delay brought him home with a double. Penn Murfee hit an RBI single to center field to put the 'Dores on top 2-0 early.
Things started to heat up in the fifth inning when Ro Coleman reached first on a fielder's choice. Jeren Kendall grounded out to first to advance Coleman and Bryan Reynolds walked. With two outs, Will Toffey brought them home with a double to left field.
Vanderbilt wasn't done yet as Alonzo Jones singled to advance Toffey to third. In the next at-bat, Delay notched his second RBI of the day with a single to left field to score Toffey.
The Cardinals took no time to respond in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally of their own. Jack Klein hit an RBI double to bring Jesse Kuet home. Bryce Carter hit a Stanford RBI double to make the score to 5-2.
Ryan Johnson came in to pitch for Kyle Wright, who threw an excellent five innings for the 'Dores. Johnson got two outs for Vanderbilt in the sixth inning before being relieved by Collin Snider. Snider threw a perfect seventh inning consisting of three consecutive groundouts.
In the eighth inning, Vanderbilt went to right-hander Matt Ruppenthal who got a groundout and two strikeouts to retire the side. Hayden Stone entered in the ninth inning to close out the game with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to ensure the Commodores left Palo Alto with a 2-1 series win over the Cardinals.
Vanderbilt returns home to Nashville for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday against Radford before a three-game weekend series against Xavier that begins Friday, March 3rd.
