Vanderbilt makes NCAA Tournament!

Sunday started off as a rainy, gloomy day in Nashville but by the late afternoon the sun was shining and the Vanderbilt Commodores had earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores will play Wichita State in a First Four game on Tuesday in Dayton.

Vanderbilt  (19-13) was predicted by many to not make the tournament.  Likely it was the double-digit victories over SEC Tournament tops seeds Kentucky and Texas A&M, both who advanced to the championship game, which set Vandy apart from some others.

Other factors could have helped the Commodores playing tough road games at Purdue, Baylor, Texas along with a fairly close loss to Kansas on a neutral floor. Had the Commodores played a couple cupcake games in place of a couple of those they'd likely have a better record and be a considered a lock.  Vandy also had no "bad" losses.

Wichita State (24-8, 16-2 Missouri Valley Conference) went 1-1 in their conference tournament.  The Shocker's biggest win was a 67-50 home victory over No. 25 Utah.   Alabama (64-60 WSU loss) is the only common opponent for Vandy and WSU.

Wichita State has an NCAA RPI of 48 while Vanderbilt is 61st.

The winner of the Vanderbilt-Wichita State game will play as an 11 seed on Thursday against No. 6 seed Arizona in Providence, R.I.
