Before decommitting from Vanderbilt, Lamont Atkins was the lone prospect committed to the Commodores for the 2017 class. He still plans to keep Vanderbilt among his options but Atkins will look harder at others, including a pair of power five conference contenders.
Both Virginia and Northwestern have become very interested of late and the Cavaliers have even offered Atkins. The 3-star back also recently took an unofficial visit to Northwestern and that appeared to be an issue for the Commodores coaching staff.
The word on the street is that Vanderbilt wasn’t too excited about Atkins taking visits elsewhere and made the decision that if he did visit other schools, he would no longer be considered a commitment.
A mutual decision appears to have happened between Atkins and Vanderbilt. The Virginia 3-star made the public decision on Monday night that he would re-open his recruitment and look into other options. Atkins will remain on the recruiting radar for Vanderbilt but look for them to also look into other running back prospects as well.
