Vanderbilt basketball releases non-conference schedule

Vanderbilt released the 2016-17 non-conference schedule for the Commodores on Tuesday. Look inside for full details.

The Vanderbilt men’s basketball non-conference schedule for new head coach Bryce Drew has been completed for the 2016-17 season, with the tough slate featuring four teams from the state of Tennessee, 11 who participated in postseason play a year ago, and six potential opponents who participated in the NCAA Tournament.  Butler, potential Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational opponent Arizona, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Dayton, and Iowa State each played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

Vanderbilt returns nine letter winners and three starters from the 2015-16 edition of the Commodores which finished 19-14 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons.

The Commodores will begin their season November 11 at the Veterans Classic in Annapolis, Md.

Marquette

Date: November 11

Location:  Annapolis, Md. at Veterans Classic

All-Time Series Record: Series tied at 3.

Last meeting:  A 74-57 win in Milwaukee on December Dec. 29, 2011.

2015-16 Record: 20-13, 8-10 in Big East.

Notes on Marquette: The last two meetings came in a home and home series in 2010 and 2011 with the Commodores coming away victorious in both meetings…The Golden Eagles lead the series, 1-0, in neutral site games, with the last one coming on March 14, 1974, in the NCAA Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala…Junior guard Riley LaChance (Brookfield, Wisc.) is the only Vanderbilt player that hails from the state of Wisconsin.

Belmont

Date: November 15

Location:  Memorial Gym

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead 4-0.

Last meeting:  An 85-76 win at Memorial Gym on December 4, 2010.

2015-16 Record: 20-12, 12-4 in Ohio Valley Conference.

Notes on Belmont: The Bruins are coming off of another 20-win season and a postseason appearance in the NIT last year…The two schools are separated by two miles…Belmont head coach Rick Byrd is in his 31st season with the Bruins…Former Commodore James Strong (Vanderbilt, 2000) is a member of Byrd’s staff.

Norfolk State

Date: November 18

Location:  Memorial Gym - game is a part of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead, 1-0.

Last meeting:  A 63-53 Vanderbilt win on November 25, 2014, at Memorial Gym.

2015-16 Record: 17-17, 12-4 in MEAC.

Notes on Norfolk State: The Spartans tied for second in the MEAC last season and have finished no worse than tied for third each of the last five years, the only program in the league to do so…Norfolk State will have to replace their two leading scorers from a year ago, Jeff Short and D’Shon Taylor, who both graduated…The Spartans played in the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament last year.

Bucknell

Last meeting:  An 80-68 Vanderbilt win on November 15, 2011 at Memorial Gym.

2015-16 Record: 17-14, 14-4 in Patriot League.

Notes on Bucknell: The Bison advanced to postseason play a year ago in the National Invitational Tournament and lost at Monmouth in the first round of the tournament…Bucknell captured the outright Patriot League regular-season title for the fifth time in the last six years with a 14-4 ledger, but

it fell victim to Cinderella story Holy Cross in the PL Tournament quarterfinals.

Butler

Date: November 24

Location:  Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational

All-Time Series Record: Butler leads, 5-0.

Last meeting:  An 85-77 Bulldog win in Indianapolis on November 19, 2013.

2015-16 Record: 22-11, 10-8 in Big East.

Notes on Butler: The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, knocking off Texas Tech in the opening round before falling to Virginia in the second round in Raleigh, N.C…Butler won both games of a home-and-home series ini 2012 and 2013, but before those two meetings, the two teams had not met since the 1929-30 season.

Santa Clara (Possible Opponent)

Notes on Santa Clara: Longtime coach and former mentor at N.C. State and Arizona State Herb Sendek took over for the Broncos this spring…Shooting guard Jared Brownridge is the team’s leading returning scorer after averaging 20.6 points per game a year ago.

Last meeting:  A Vanderbilt win, 84-72, at the Maui Invitational on November 25, 2009.

2015-16 Record: 25-9, 12-6 in Pac 12.

Notes on Arizona: Perennial Pac 12 power Arizona once again advanced to the NCAA Tournament in the spring of 2016…The Wildcats lost their two leading senior scorers, Gabe York and Ryan Anderson, to graduation, and also their senior center, Kaleb Tarczewski…The other meeting between the two schools came on December 29, 1956, at Memorial Gym (Vanderbilt win, 107-56).

Tennessee State

Date: November 29

Location:  Memorial Gym

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead, 8-0.

Last meeting:  A 78-46 Vanderbilt win on November 23, 2014, at Memorial Gym.

2015-16 Record: 20-11, 11-5 in Ohio Valley Conference.

Notes on Tennessee State: 2015-16 was the program's third 20-win season at the Division I level and tied the program's D-1 record for wins in a season…TSU tied for the second best record in the OVC regular season (11-5), and was the No. 4 seed in the OVC Tournament and earned a first round bye…The Tigers' season concluded with a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. TSU fell in the first round to Ball State, 78-73, in double overtime on March 15 at the Gentry Center…TSU tied for the biggest turnaround in the country, improving by 15.0 games. TSU finished 5-26 in 2014-15 and improved to 20-11 in 2015-16. The NCAA record for biggest turnaround is 17.5 games by Towson in 2012-13. 

Minnesota

Notes on Minnesota: Head Coach Richard Pitino returns for his fourth season as head coach of the Gophers in 2016-17…Minnesota welcomes six new players to the court this season, including four freshmen who were part of a top-20 nationally ranked recruiting class…This will be the first neutral site meeting between the two schools.

High Point

Last meeting:  An 81-75 Commodore win on December 15, 2002.

2015-16 Record: 21-11, 13-5 in Big South Conference.

Notes on High Point: High Point captured the Big South Conference regular season championship before falling to UNC Asheville in the Big South Tournament…The Panthers advanced to the NIT and lost in the opening round at South Carolina…The Panthers have qualified for postseason play in the last three seasons.

Middle Tennessee

Date: December 8

Location:  Murfreesboro, Tenn.

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead, 29-5.

Last meeting:  A 56-52 Blue Raider win on Dec. 21, 2012, at Bridgestone Arena.

2015-16 Record: 25-10, 13-5 in Conference USA.

Notes on Middle Tennessee: The two teams will meet for the 35th time in the history of the two schools and for the 18th time in Murfreesboro…Vanderbilt has a 13-4 record in games played at Middle Tennessee…The Blue Raiders advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and knocked off Michigan State in the first round of the tournament in St. Louis.

Tennessee-Chattanooga

Date: December 17

Location:  Memorial Gym

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead, 13-3.

Last meeting:  A 69-57 Commodore win on Nov. 25, 2001, at Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.

2015-16 Record: 29-6, 15-3 in Southern Conference.

Notes on Tennessee-Chattanooga: The Mocs finished the 2015-16 season as the SoCon champions, both regular season and tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they dropped their first-round game to Indiana in Des Moines, Iowa…The last game between the two schools at Memorial Gym came on December 3, 1986, in a 93-64 Vanderbilt win.

Dayton

Date: December 21

Location:  Dayton, Ohio

All-Time Series Record: Commodores lead, 4-1.

Last meeting:  A 72-67 Dayton win at Memorial Gym on December 9, 2015.

2015-16 Record: 25-8, 14-4 in Atlantic 10.

Notes on Dayton: This will be the back end of a home-and-home series, with the Flyers winning last season at Memorial Gym…The Commodores have played two other games at Dayton in 1992 and 2005, and won both games…The Flyers advanced to the 2016 NCAA Tournament and lost their first round game against Syracuse.

Iowa State

Date: January 28

Location:  Memorial Gym

All-Time Series Record: Iowa State leads series, 4-3.

Last meeting:  an 80-79 Cyclone win at Memorial Gym on December 28, 1985

2015-16 Record: 23-12, 10-8 in Big 12.

Notes on Iowa State: This game will be a part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge…Vanderbilt has not matched up with the Cyclones since 1985…Iowa State advanced to the Sweet 16 last season at the NCAA Tournament, defeating Iona and Arkansas-Little Rock in Denver before falling to Virginia in the regional semifinals in Chicago.
