Bryce Drew era opens with loss

The Bryce Drew era has officially begun at Vanderbilt University. It was a game of two halves. Vanderbilt won the first stanza by a point and lost the second by 25. A real tale of two halves. Final: Marquette 95, Vanderbilt 71.

Jerry Reves, Special to VandyMania.

First 4 and ½ minutes – their defense is bothering us and not executing the half court well.  If we get it to the wings, we are driving the baseline and have had good looks.  Their defense is giving us trouble and our rebounding seems to be giving them fits.

Kornet is our offense, defense and rebounding.

T.O. VU with 11:51 left – we seem to be tight and are getting out hustled.  Seem to have a bit more talent.  We are seem to be doing better on the boards but worse on than them on defense.

Substituting freely – after the TO.  Down 4 with 12 min to go.

Missed 2 FTs (Willis)

TO 7:49  VU struggling to penetrate their defense and down by four, 25-21.  Foul trouble for our bigs.

TO and Tied up with 2:36 to go and with 4:14 they had 10 fouls.

The last 2:36 of first half began with them at the line for one and one.  Luke Fischer made them both. (He and Luke Kornet are key to each team).  LaChance missed 1 of 2 free throws with 1:07 left.

30 sec. timeout with 1:07 to go in half trailing, 38-39.  Our rebounding and hustle under the basket is new.  Now up 40-39 with 22.8 left first half.  40-39 at half because of our rebounding.

The start of the second half was terrible: 1 minute and 37 seconds and they are up by five.  Shooting two 3’s and we missed some easy shots.  Lousy passing.

14:38 Time Out – they are hot from three three and we seem unsure on offense.  Down by 10 in the first five minutes of the second half.

With 9:35 left in the game VU has scored 6 points in about 10 minutes and Marquette has scored 29.  They are red hot – hitting everything.  They out hustled us the entire second half.

7:40 TO and 49-74.  Horrible half.  Is effort reflected in only three fouls in the second half with 4:26 to go?

FT shooting very bad and not a very good start for both the season and Bryce Drew's career at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt (0-1) will open the home portion of its schedule this Tuesday night against Belmont.  That game tips at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.
