Vanderbilt football received big news tonight and a huge piece of the 2018 recruiting puzzle as 4-star Rockwall (Tx) linebacker Alston Orji announced his commitment to the Commodores.
Orji has been one of the Commodores top targets of the entire 2018 class for over more than a year now. His profile as a high academic young man as well as being a potential star on the football field, drew Vanderbilt to the Texas 4-star and their invested time paid off tonight.
The Rockwall standout is ranked by Scout as the No. 1 outside linebacker prospect in the state of Texas. He is also rated as the No. 5 overall outside linebacker in the country while sitting just outside the Scout 100 at No. 107.
While he is rated and ranked as an outside linebacker. Orji was recruited by Vanderbilt to play inside linebacker as a part of their 3-4 defensive scheme. His athleticism, intelligence and power translates well to inside linebacker and gives the Commodores a play maker from the inside who has the size and range as former Vanderbilt All-American linebacker Zach Cunningham.
Orji is the Commodores 4th commitment of the 2018 class, joining fellow commits (QB) Allan Walters, (C) Dan Dawkins and (Ath) Miles Jones. The 4-star linebacker becomes the Dores first defensive commit of the 2018 class and by year's end, could end being the top rated recruit of the Commodores 2018 recruiting class.
Vanderbilt did a great job at recruiting Orji as they had to fend off several high profile programs for his commitment. Orji choose the Commodores over offers from the likes of Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA, Utah and few others.
Commodores head coach Derek Mason is doing a great job of selling the Vanderbilt football program as a place to play at the highest level of college football while earning one of the best educations you can receive in the country and his work is definitely evident with tonight's addition of 4-star Alston Orji.
