Previewing this weekend's Clemson Regional

Vanderbilt opens the 2017 NCAA Tournament on the road at the Clemson Regional. The Commodores open up against the St. John's Red Storm while the Clemson Tigers face off against UNC-Greensboro. DoresDaily gives in-depth look at the VandyBoys possible opponents in this weekend's regional.

The Commodores are headed for the 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and this weekend will be the first time that Vanderbilt has seen any of the teams associated in the regional, in postseason play.

Vanderbilt opens regional play Friday morning at 11 am Central against the St. John's Red Storm. Game two pits No. 1 seed  and host Clemson against UNC-Greensboro. It is a double elimination tournament, so there is a possibility of seeing each team in the regional at least once.

Tournament play begins soon, so with that said, DoresDaily brings you an in-depth look at the three teams Vanderbilt will or could face in this weekend's regional

Quick Analysis

The Tigers head into the regional as the No. 1 seed and team to beat but they are struggling a bit, looking to get back on track. They finished the season with ACC sweeps and series lost to UNC, Florida St and NC State while also going two an out in the ACC Tournament. They did finish 5th in the overall ACC standings while placing two guys on the All-ACC 2nd team (Seth Beer and Pat Krall). Clemson has been a good mix all season of hitting and pitching. The Tigers sport a team batting average of .286 while the pitching has an era of 3.83. Their starting rotation has really been strong for the Tigers this year and could be key towards advancing into the Super Regionals. Clemson has five hitters batting .290 or better throughout their lineup. The Tigers aren't that strong at stealing bases but they do a solid job of bringing runners home. The bullpen has been steady with a few low moments but with two guys on the back end (Gilliam and Hennessy) along with another part time starter/long reliever (Jackson), Clemson has enough arms to run at the mound. Barnes is expected to get the start against UNC-Greensboro.

#2 seed - St. John's Red Storm

Quick Analysis

The Red Storm head into the NCAA Tournament as one of the best overall hitting teams in the country. St. John's currently ranks 3rd nationally in hitting at .327. Every batter in the lineup, except one, bat over ,300 which means this is a very consistent, contact hitting team. They are not overpowering with home runs or RBI's but the Red Storm are a contact hitting, small ball type team who can frustrate you and make you change up your game plan. While their hitting is strong, their pitching staff is good as well. St. John's finished the regular season ranked 6th nationally with a team era of 2.97. They are led by Big East Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year Sean Mooney. St. John's has had a great season but their competition level hasn't been that great. They do however have a win over national #2 seed UNC. This is the 36th appearance ever in the NCAA Tournament for the Red Storm and they have advanced to only one super regional ('99).

#4 seed - UNC Greensboro Spartans

Quick Analysis

The Spartans head into postseason play after winning the SoCon conference tournament for the first time in school's history. Greensboro has not made it to the NCAA Tournament since 1997. Regional play begins for Greensboro against No. 1 seed Clemson and the Spartans weakness could be their pitching staff. The best era on the team comes from Alex Sova, a relief pitcher who has thrown more walks than strikeouts. The starters have a solid win/loss record but the era's are not the strong. The Spartans make up for the pitching at the plate. Greensboro sports the SoCon Freshman of the Year in Caleb Webster and one of the top overall players in the conference in Michael Goss. Greensboro is a base stealing team who takes chances on the base paths while using the long ball on solid occasions. The Spartans won't be intimated by playing the #1 seed on the home field.
