Vanderbilt has landed one of their biggest targets of the 2018 class today as 3-star Brentwood Academy (TN) tight end Gavin Schoenwald announced his commitment to the Commodores.
Schoenwald has been a priority target for Coach Mason and staff for a very long time and they had to put in work as the 3-star recruit ended up choosing the Commodores over offers from Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee and others.
The 6'5 athletic offensive standout is somewhat new to the tight end position but is quickly picking things up and could eventually turn into a dual guy with All-SEC abilities. Schoenwald transitioned over to tight end last season as a junior and played the position quite well. His potential on the next level at tight end is limitless as he has the size, hands, skills and toughness to grow into one of the best tight ends in the Southeastern Conference.
There is a possibility however that Schoenwald turns into a quarterback on the next level as well. The Brentwood Academy star has always been quarterback that had to transition over to tight end for playing time but as a senior, it is expected that Schoenwald will be the man under center for the Eagles. He could easily develop into a top flight signal caller or stay at tight end while at Vanderbilt.
This addition of Schoenwald is a big get for Coach Mason and the Commodores. He is a local recruit who was chased after by some top level programs and to be able to keep him home, is big for Vanderbilt.
The ability to put a fence around Nashville is a goal for Vanderbilt, so being able to land Schoenwald helps put a major post up on that fence. Now can they pull in his teammate, 4-star athlete Camron Johnson? Having his teammate and friend a part of the class will certainly help that cause but there is still work to be done.
Schoenwald becomes the 6th prospect to commit to Vanderbilt for the 2018 class and the 2nd tight end added.
