Pete's Pigskin Prognostications: Week 12

As usual, I missed picking 2 games last week. This qualifies as the "Year of Inconsistency" in college football. The only constant seems to be Oklahoma killing whomever they play. Thus has to be one of the strangest years in my aged memory, especially in the SEC.

Florida @ South Carolina – The Gators appear to be out of the SEC championship game picture. Their disappointment won't matter enough to allow them to falter against the Gamecocks. Florida 24 – SC 13.

Mississippi State @ UTK – Can you say cannon fodder? The ever-inconsistent Volunteers should be able to give significant rest to their starters in the this game. Look for Gerald Riggs to have a field day after the game is decided. UTK by 32.

New Mexico State @ Arkansas – Looks like a classic late-season mismatch. An average team from a strong conference vs. a mediocre team from a weak conference. Arkansas will be overlooking NMS but it won't matter. Arkansas by 28.

LSU @ Alabama – LSU must win this game to set up the showdown with Ole Miss next week meaningful. Alabama has nothing to lose (or win). LSU's motivation should overcome the Crimson Tide's lack of same. LSU by 6.

Auburn @ Georgia – This game has more sub-texts than Moby Dick. Auburn has absolutely owned Georgia between the hedges the last several years. Georgia must win to have a chance to go to the SEC Championship Game (after the league wimps changed their mind on the seventh tiebreaker). Auburn has been a major disappointment all year. Georgia is the walking wounded. I could go on, but enough is enough. I'll pick Georgia for the simple reason that they're favored, and I prefer that they win (knocking UTK out of the SEC Championship). But an Auburn win wouldn't surprise me. Georgia by 4.

Kentucky @ Vanderbilt – Vandy is a 7-point underdog this week. This season, 7-point dogs (and more – UTK was _13.5!) are winning a lot this year. Well, some things never change. Kentucky by 17, as the Commodores get into the Christmas season early by giving the ball away at crucial times. Well, they say it's better to give than to receive, and VU is a believer.
