Vandy men to open at UConn?

According to a Connecticut newspaper, Vanderbilt's men's basketball team will play Connecticut of the Big East Conference at UConn's Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in mid-November. It would likely be the season opener for Coach Kevin Stallings' team.

Vanderbilt's men's basketball schedule has not yet been announced.  But Connecticut, coached by Jim Calhoun, would be the highest-profile regular-season opponent for Vanderbilt in some time.  The Huskies won a National Championship under Calhoun in 1999.

The Waterbury (Conn.) Republic-American did not list a specific date, only saying that this year's game would be in "mid-November".  It has been rumored that as part of the deal, Connecticut would travel to Nashville to play Vanderbilt sometime during the 2002-03 season.

Last year's Connecticut team went 22-12 and failed to make the NCAA Tournament, but played two games in the NIT.  Vanderbilt finished 15-15 last year, and did not participate in postseason play.

Vanderbilt's early-season schedule, when announced, is also expected to include an appearance in the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 23-25.  The Commodores will play three games in the tournament, amongst a field that includes Notre Dame, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Hampton, Monmouth, Akron and Liberty.
