Recruiting Tidbits: There has been some speculation on the message boards over the number of scholarships the coaching staff will have available to them for the 2002 signing class. Right now, it looks like the number will be 14 or 15.
There are currently 85 scholarship players on the roster for the
2001 season. That includes 15 players who are in their final year of
eligibility - Rodney Williams, Lew Thomas, Tim Olmstead, Greg Zolman, Everett Robinson, Harold Lercius, David Meadows, Nate Morrow, Antuian
Bradford, Pat Green, Duncan Cave, Wally Conyers, Nezih Hasanoglu, Joe
Webb, and Doyle Crosby. I suspect that another 3 will either graduate
or otherwise "move on" - Justin Purkey, Jordan Hill, and Brent Peacher.
Three of the spots will be taken in January of 2002 by Ben Koger,
Ronnie Swoopes, and Kelechi Ohanaja. If Brandon Walthour is able to appeal his eligibility case successfully, he may be granted a scholarship for 2002 as well. That would leave the number at 14, four of which have been claimed by current verbal commitments Kyle Ralph, Ricky Brown, Adam Dossett, and Brett Tobin.
Speaking of commitments, it looks as if Vanderbilt may be close (if
they haven't already) to landing commitment #5. Keep an eye out for any
news on WR/FS Erik Davis (6-2, 185) from Nashville's Ezell-Harding High
School. The VU coaching staff is high on Davis' talents, having offered
him a scholarship back in July.
Recently, several new names have been added to the database. Among them are: DL Rick Blaul, QB Steve Breaston, ATH Bryan Brown, RB Dan Burks, FS John Busing, DL Jermaine Leslie, OL Jacob Peeler, OL Corey Seiuli, and WR Matt Trannon.
QB Chris Crumpton of Hartselle, AL has committed to Southern Miss.
