After trailing early by as much as four points. Vanderbilt tied the game at nine with 13:51 left in the first half on a three pointer by Brendan Plavich. Later Vanderbilt took its first lead at 12-9 when freshman Jason Holwerda hit another three pointer for the Commodores.
With nine minutes left in the first half the Vanderbilt lead had bulged to 23-11. With seven minutes remaining the lead was 30-12. At the half the score stood at 40-23.
For the first half Vanderbilt hit 52% of its field goals to a paltry 29% for Northern State. The Commodores hit 54% of their three point shots compared to just 29% for the Huskies. Vandy also hit 54% of their free throws to 56% for Northern.
In the second half Northern started to chip away at the Commodores lead. A basket by Jason Hanson 12:39 remaining in the game brought Northern State to within six points at 48-42. Moments later though a lay up by Commodore senior Sam Howard would put Vanderbilt's back to 13 at 58-45. The closest the margin would get after that was at nine points with just three minutes remaining. Vanderbilt scorers were as follows: Howard 14, Howerda 12, Thornton 11, Plavich 10, Freije 9, Smith 6, Przybyszewski and Hundley each with 5.
Freshman David Przybyszewski continues to make a good impression and was the top rebounder for the Commodores with 7. Fellow freshman Brian Thornton pulled down 6.
Vanderbilt next hosts Liberty University on Friday night (7PM) at Memorial Gymnasium for their season opener before traveling to the University of Connecticut on November 19.
