If you live in Atlanta or Cincinnati and you love to watch great high school football, for about ten bucks you can welcome in the season in a big way this Saturday. Both cities are hosting multiple-game football-fests that are absolute nirvana for prep gridiron junkies.
Atlanta's Georgia Dome will host the Corky Kell Classic-- eight powerhouse teams and four games, starting at 11:45 a.m. About 25,000 fans attended this event last year. The nightcap at 8:30 should be of the most interest to Vandy fans: Lilburn-Parkview vs. McEachern.
Parkview features Vandy prospect Jeff Francoeur, the Panthers' Mr. Everything. The All-State safety and wide receiver, who is also probably the state's best baseball prospect, is still mentioning Vandy among his favorites. Last year in Francoeur's junior year, Parkview went 15-0 and won the 5A state title.
McEachern, from Cobb County, is also one of the state's best programs, and the school that produced current Vandy players Matt Clay and Norval McKenzie.
The other three games are Starr's Mill vs. East Coweta, 11:45 a.m.; Dacula vs. Westside-Macon, 2:45 p.m.; and Brookwood vs. Harrison, 5:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday, if you live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, for ten bucks you can see another absolute football feast, not to mention two Vandy commitments. The Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown starts at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium. Wow, five high school games in one stadium over 13 hours!
At 1:30 p.m. St. Xavier-- featuring offensive lineman Kyle Ralph, who committed to Vandy during the summer-- takes on Oak Hills. Then at 6:30 Elder-- featuring linebacker Ricky Brown, who has also committed to play at Vandy-- takes on Sycamore. Other games will involve Cincinnati powers Colerain, Fairfield and Moeller.
Even a consummate football freak like me could O.D. at one of these events.
