Women's tennis downs Vols, 5-2; Men's tennis falls

The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team kept its undefeated home record with a 5-2 win over 28th-ranked Tennessee at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Friday. With the win, the Commodores moved to 8-1 in the Southeastern Conference and 18-2 overall. Meanwhile in Knoxville, the 20th-ranked Vanderbilt men's team dropped a 5-2 decision to 17th-ranked Tennessee Friday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team kept its undefeated home record with a 5-2 win over 28th-ranked Tennessee at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Friday. With the win, the Commodores moved to 8-1 in the Southeastern Conference and 18-2 overall.

Vanderbilt swept the three doubles matches before closing the match out with four singles wins. The senior duo of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos, ranked No. 3 in the country, defeated Tammy Encina and Majen Immink, 8-4, at first doubles.

Juniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees clinched the point for the Commodores with a 9-7 win over Sabita Maharaj and Melissa Schaub at second doubles. VU sophomore Ashley Schellhas and freshman Amanda Fish rallied to an 8-6 victory in a tiebreaker over Blakeley Griffith and Victoria Jones at third doubles.

Tennessee would take the first two points in singles play, winning on the second and third courts. Tsoubanos began the Vanderbilt rally with a 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles over Immink. Schellhas gave the Commodores a 3-2 advantage by defeating Jones, 6-4, 6-2, at fifth singles.

Falk, ranked No. 25 in the nation, clinched the match for Vanderbilt a first singles. She defeated No. 27 Encina, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), to give the Commodores the decisive point. At sixth singles, Menees tacked on another VU point when her opponent, Schaub, retired late in third set with Menees leading 4-1.

The Commodores return to action at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday, when fourth-ranked Georgia visits Nashville for a Noon CT match.

No. 20 VU Men's Tennis Falls To No. 17 Tennessee, 5-2

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 20th-ranked Vanderbilt men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to 17th-ranked Tennessee Friday at the UT Varsity Courts. The loss drops the Commodores to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in the Southeastern Conference.

The Dores jumped out to an early advantage in doubles play when senior Zach Dailey and sophomore Greg Sossaman defeated Mark Dietrich and Wade Orr, 8-3, at second doubles. But the Volunteers rallied, and would eventually clinch the first team point with a 9-7 victory at first doubles.

In singles play, Commodore senior Chad Harris quickly tied the match, defeating UT's Ockie Oosthuizen, 6-1, 6-1, at second singles. Junior Matt Lockin also was victorious for Vanderbilt, taking a 6-4, 7-5 decision at third singles. But Tennessee came back to earn wins at fourth and sixth singles to hold a 3-2 advantage.

The match was decided at first singles, where 45th-ranked Simon Rea of UT edged 52nd-ranked Scott Brown of Vanderbilt, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3. The Vols would get another three-set victory at fifth singles for their final 5-2 advantage.

The Commodores continue their road trip in Athens, Ga., on Sunday, April 4, with a Noon CT match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
