Sources have informed VandyMania that Charlie Strong has agreed to meet with Vanderbilt officials to discuss the Commodore head coaching vacancy. The meeting is reportedly scheduled for some time after the South Carolina-Clemson game on Saturday.
Charlie Strong is in his second year with the University of South Carolina. Under his direction the Gamecock defense has improved from 10th in total defense in the SEC in 1998 to 20th ranked nationally in 1999. The Gamecock defensive coordinator has been frequently mentioned by Vanderbilt followers as a potential replacement for fifth year head coach Woody Widenhofer. Widenhofer resigned last week after a 71-13 loss at Florida.
Strong has previously coached at Notre Dame as the defensive line coach. Strong also had coaching stints at Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Southern Illinois.
Strong played college football at the University Central Arkansas.
