TULSA, Okla. -- The Vanderbilt men's tennis team ended its NCAA Tournament run with a 4-0 loss to top-ranked Illinois in the quarterfinal round Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Commodores fought hard against the tournament's No. 1 seed, but became the Fighting Illini's 64th consecutive victim.

Defending national champion Illinois advances to the NCAA Semifinals, which features the tournament's top four seeds for the first time in history. Vanderbilt, the 2003 Runner-up, fell to the Illini in the tournament for the second consecutive season.

Vanderbilt (17-12) ran through No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 9 Georgia to advance to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, but was unable to overcome No. 1 Illinois (32-0), a team which has not lost since the 2002 NCAA Quarterfinals.

Illinois took the doubles point to gain early momentum. The point was clinched at the top position, where Brian Wilson and Phil Stolt defeated VU's Chad Harris and Scott Brown in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

In singles action, first sets on all six courts were hard fought. Just over two hours into the match, play was delayed due to rain. After a two-hour delay, play would resume indoors.

Illinois' Brian Wilson scored a 7-6, 6-3 win at first singles to give his squad a 2-0 lead. At sixth singles, G.D. Jones also won a tough first set and then closed out his match, winning 7-5, 6-1. The match was clinched at fourth singles, where IU senior Michael Calkins defeated VU's Zach Dailey, edging the Commodore senior by only one break in each set, 6-4, 6-4.

The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will begin later this week. Chad Harris will take part in the singles tournament on Wednesday, May 26, and will team up with Scott Brown for the doubles championship, which kicks off on Thursday, May 27.
