Men's Hoops: Vanderbilt 100 Hampton 85

HONOLULU, HAWAII- The sharp-shooting Vanderbilt Commodores opened the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving classic with a 100-85 win over the Hampton Pirates. The Commodores hit an impressive 63 percent of their field goals and 81 percent of their free throws to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Newcomer David Przybyszewski paced the Commodores by scoring 23 points and pulling down eight rebounds.  The Polish sensation dazzled the tropical crowd by hitting 10 of 11 field goals, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

The Commodores raced off to a 53-35 halftime which included a 34-7 run in the last 10 minutes of the half.

The Pirates rallied in the second half and cut the lead to as little as five with 5 minutes remaining but good free throw shooting by the 'Dores late in the game preserved the win.    Freshman Brian Thornton hit 9 of 12 free throws in the game after struggling from the charity stripe in earlier games.

Other scorers for Vandy include Matt Freije 20; Sam Howard 15; Chuck Moore 14; Brendan Plavich 12; Brian Thornton 9.

Vanderbilt out rebounded the Pirates 29-25 but lost the turnover battle 15-9.

Vandy will next face the Monmouth (NJ) Hawks who defeated the Akron Zips Friday evening, 64-61, at 6 PM CST on Saturday. Top Stories
