Hoping to get a better feel for some of the colleges recruiting him, Klein, Texas running back Jared Hawkins made a remarkable tour of college camps over the last few days with his father.
"Vanderbilt has pushed to the top of Jared's list," said Hawkins' father, Jeff. "He was impressed with the school, the education he would get from there, the facilities and the coaches. He really liked Coach Carter, the running backs coach."
The 5-10, 175-pound Hawkins wowed the Vanderbilt coaches with a 4.47 time in the 40-yard dash, the best of all the running backs in the camp. It was also a personal best for Hawkins, whose previous best time was a 4.50.
After the camp, the Vanderbilt coaches reportedly called him aside. Though they did not offer a scholarship offer immediately, they indicated one could be forthcoming and asked him not to commit to anyone else before talking to them.
"I liked the Vanderbilt campus," Hawkins said. "It was really nice."
Hawkins has only one offer at this point, from The Citadel. He lists a top five of Vanderbilt, Baylor, Arizona, Duke and Central Florida. He is the top returning running back on a team that went 5-5 last season.
"Hopefully my season will go well for me this year, and I will get some more offers," Hawkins said.
