Ohio State University has asked Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams II for permission to talk with head basketball coach Kevin Stallings about its open head coaching position, The Tennessean reported Monday. Ohio State is seeking a new coach after Jim O'Brien was fired June 8. Stallings, reached by the Tennessean, had no comment.

Ohio State Director of Athletics Andy Geiger contacted Williams late last week about the opening, the Nashville newspaper reported. Williams was quoted as saying, "But we told Andy Geiger that we were going to keep him."

Stallings, who is preparing for his sixth season as Commodore head coach, led Vanderbilt to a 23-10 season and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2003-04. He had been under consideration for the Ohio State job in 1997 when he was head coach at Illinois State, but the Buckeyes hired O'Brien instead.

Just two years ago, Geiger lured Vanderbilt women's basketball coach Jim Foster away to Ohio State.
