Former Vanderbilt forward Matt Freije signed Thursday with the National Basketball Association's Miami Heat.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team. Freije was selected by the Heat in the second round (53rd pick overall) of the 2004 NBA Draft in June.

"It's been a nerve-wracking last couple of weeks, waiting to finalize a contract," Freije said. "It's an honor to sign and have the opportunity to play for an organization like Miami."

Earlier this summer, Freije (6-10, 249, Overland Park, Kan.) appeared in five games for the Heat in the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, averaging 10.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.6 minutes per game. In his final game of the league, he shot 8-for-12 from the field (5-for-6 3FG) for a total of 25 points and eight rebounds in 32 minutes.

"Everyone says the Heat organization gets a lot done in the offseason," Freije said. "I've been down here for two months and everyone is working hard. We have a great combination of young guys and veterans. Plus, having Shaq helps. It all should make for an exciting season."

Vanderbilt's all-time leading scorer (1,891 points), Freije averaged 15.6 points and 4.9 rebounds during his Commodore career. A 2004 First Team All-Southeastern Conference honoree, Freije averaged 18.4 points as a senior while helping lead the Commodores to the NCAA Tournament Phoenix Regional Semifinal and a 23-10 overall record.
