Turner interviews Strong

Vanderbilt Athletic Director Todd Turner flew to Columbia, South Carolina on Thursday to interview South Carolina defensive coordinator Charlie Strong regarding the Commodores' head football coaching vacancy, VandyMania has learned.

Sources also have informed VandyMania that an announcement about the head coaching position is expected sometime next week.

Strong, 41, has served 3 seasons as defensive coordinator under South Carolina head coach Lou Holtz.  He has also served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, Florida, Ole Miss and Southern Illinois.

Strong had been rumored as a candidate for Vanderbilt's coaching vacancy since Nov. 8, the day Woody Widenhofer resigned.

Strong has also been mentioned as a candidate for the vacancies at Kansas and California.  If hired, he would become the first African-American head coach ever in the Southeastern Conference.
