Joseph was named 1st Team All-State (Division II) by the media and coaches for the 2003 season. The Tennessean also named Birdsong to its All-Mid State squad.
The following information was revealed during our interview with Joseph Birdsong:
What is your current height, weight and forty time? "I am 6-4, 275, and I run a 5.25 forty."
Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "My coach puts me at left tackle, but the colleges are looking at me for either center or guard."
What is your current bench press, squat, and vertical? "I bench 325, squat 405, and my vertical was measured at 26" at the Nike Camp (Atlanta)."
Which camps did you attend this summer? "Just the Nike and Auburn camps."
What makes you a good football player? "I think it is just the way I have been trying to play. My junior year, I had something to prove, so I played real hard. This year, I have nothing to prove, but I want to do it for my teammates, so they will become better players."
Physically, what makes you a good player? "I think I am pretty strong. I use my quick feet and my techniques to get the upper edge."
What are you trying to work on? "Definitely my speed. I have been working on pulling a lot too. It is definitely showing."
Any scholarship offers? "So far, I have Vandy, Ole Miss, MSU, and Wake Forest. Tennessee and Alabama seem to be real close to offering. Sometime soon they are going to offer, real soon."
Which schools are you keeping a close eye on? "I am actually interested in all of those schools. I have only seen Vandy up close, so right now it is still up in the air."
Which coaches have made an impact with you? "Coaches Cain and Johnson at Vandy. Coach Beamer at MSU. Coach Ball at Alabama and Coaches Roper and Latina at Ole Miss. All of those guys have been fun to talk with."
Have you had a chance to attend any college games so far? "I have not gone to any so far. Right now, I plan on going to the UT/FL game unofficially."
What will you be looking for when you are trying to find the best fit for you? "Just a place to be happy at. A school that places a big emphasis on both academics and football. The way the coaches and players carry themselves will be important too. Their campus and just a place I will be happy at."
Joseph carries a 3.0 GPA and a 1050 on the SAT.
