Senior Spotlight: Lorenzo Parker

Who's the fastest man on the Vanderbilt football team? We posed that question to senior cornerback Lorenzo Parker, who is unquestionably among the fastest. The the 5-11, 190-pounder from Farmington Hills, Mich. also talked about playing both offense and defense last spring, and his favorite style of music.

VandyMania: Lorenzo, your season kind of got off to a bad start in fall camp when you had kind of a painful injury to your derriere, right?

Senior cornerback Lorenzo Parker: (Laughs) Yeah, it was before we even put pads on for the first time. I was trying to make a play, and ended up getting a little too high, trying to get the ball, and I landed a little awkwardly on my hip. Yeah, it was in that general... area. It was kind of painful!

VM: You had a little flirtation in spring practice with playing receiver, right? Is there a possibility that could happen again before the season's out?

Lorenzo: Actually I felt pretty good about that whole experience. I worked with the coaches on the other side of the ball for a change. Being on that side of the ball is kind of different for me. I had some experience back in high school, so it just reintroduced me back to that. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

VM: The secondary has been a very deep position this year, with a lot of experience, and a lot of young guys coming in to provide depth.

Lorenzo: You're right. We've got some guys in the secondary, some younger guys that are just very talented. We definitely have some depth in the secondary, and it's been very competitive for playing time.

VM: We've heard that if you're not the fastest guy on the team, you're probably pretty close to it. Can you tell us the real scoop?

Lorenzo: (Laughs) You know what? Everybody has his own opinion as to who's really the fastest. I can't even really go there. I know I'm not slow, but I know we have a lot of guys on the team who are really fast. Thanks to Coach Sisk, we're always getting stronger and faster and more explosive.

VM: Have you been timed in the 40 recently? Or in the 100? You used to run the 100 in high school, didn't you?

Lorenzo: Yeah, I ran the 100 in high school. But as far as the 40 goes, none of us are really in our best shape to be running that. I don't think any of us have any definite, permanent 40-yard time.

VM: What are some of your favorite things to do off the field?

Lorenzo: I'm very deep in music. I really like musical entertainment. I'm taking my business (Human and Organizational Development) major and hopefully use that to kind of guide me in the right direction business-wise.

VM: So you might land here in Nashville, maybe with some kind of country music outfit?

Lorenzo: (Laughs) NOOO, no, not in Nashville! Nashville is a great city, but I'm not sure the kind of music I'm doing is fit for Nashville. But definitely, my first love is football.

VM: What kind of music would it be, then?

Lorenzo: It'd be hip-hop and R&B.

VM: What's in your CD player right now?

Lorenzo: That would have to be JayZee, and Notorious B.I.G., and Tupac [Shakur], of course! Definitely!

VM: Is that what you listen to before a game to kind of get you in the right frame of mind?

Lorenzo: Of course!
