Fowler had served as an assistant at Furman for 16 years. He was named defensive coordinator and linebackers coach of the Paladins in 1999. Previously he had coached Furman's secondary for five seasons.
During his five-season stint in charge of Furman's secondary, Fowler coached six All-Southern Conference performers, including consensus All-America safety John Keith, a fourth round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2000 NFL Draft.
During the 2001 season Fowler's defensive unit held opponents to an average of 275 yards and 14 points a game. In 15 games the unit tallied 38 sacks and 16 interceptions.
Fowler is the first assistant to be named to Johnson's staff. It's possible that other Furman assistants could join Johnson and Fowler at Vandy.
Fowler played cornerback at Furman during his college playing career from 1977-80.
