Vanderbilt tops Scrappy Alabama-Huntsville, 68-53

Vanderbilt concluded exhibition play with a 68-53 win over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Four Commodores scored in double figures led by freshman guard Alex Gordon's 14 points. Senior Jason Holwerda was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, including a trio of three-pointers. Fellow senior Corey Smith tallied 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also handed out a team-best seven assists.

Vanderbilt jumped to an early 11-1 advantage thanks to a Commodore defense that swiped five steals in the first six minutes of the game. Julian Terrell and Smith stole the ball away from the Chargers two times each in the early going. Gordon nailed a three-pointer and converted a fastbreak lay-in during the stretch.

The Commodores held the Chargers without a basket until center Daniel Easterly converted a three-point play at the 13:38 mark of the first half. However, Alabama-Huntsville stayed within striking distance most of the game thanks in part to Easterly's game-high 19 points.

Vanderbilt outrebounded the Chargers 40-17 and dished out 20 assists as a team.

The Commodores open regular season play Friday, Nov. 19, when a talented Toledo squad comes to Memorial Gymnasium. The game will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Vanderbilt women's basketball season opener against St. Francis (Pa.) which tips-off at 6 p.m. CT.
