Women's Tennis: Vandy mauls Rice 7-0

The No. 4 Vanderbilt women's tennis team remained undefeated during the 2002 season as they defeated Rice 7-0 Saturday at the Currey Tennis Center.

The Commodores (4-0) opened the match by taking all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead.  Vanderbilt have now swept the doubles in each of their first four dual matches of the season.  The Commodores then swept the six singles matches to complete the 7-0 victory.  Seniors Kate Burson (Washington, D.C.) and Jenny Miller (Savannah, Ga.) led the Vanderbilt attack with their victories at No. 1 and No. 2.  Freshmen Katie Blaszak (Fairfax, Va.) and Audra Falk (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomores Kelly Schmandt (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield, Mo.) earned the other Vanderbilt singles wins.

Vanderbilt will return to action on Sunday as the take on their first ranked opponent of 2002, No. 25 South Alabama at the Currey Tennis Center at noon.
"I think today's match gave us some momentum heading into tomorrow," said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald.  "The match against South Alabama will be a great college tennis match and will be a good measuring stick for our team early in the season."
