Women's Tennis: VU Defeats No. 25 South Alabama

The No. 4 Vanderbilt women's tennis team defeated its first ranked opponent of the season as they topped No. 25 South Alabama 6-1 Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.

The Commodores (5-0) opened the match by taking all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead.  Vanderbilt have now swept the doubles in each of their first five dual matches of the season.  The Commodores took a 2-0 lead when the Jaguars defaulted at No. 6 singles.  Vanderbilt then won four of the five singles matches played to complete the 6-1 victory.  Senior Jenny Miller (Savannah, Ga.), sophomore Kelly Schmandt (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and freshman Katie Blaszak (Fairfax, Va.) all won matches in straight sets for Vanderbilt.
"I think today was a good test for our team to see how we matched up against a ranked team," stated Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald.  "Our next challenge is to see how we respond playing on the road."
The Commodores return to action next weekend with their first road-trip of the season as they visit No. 47 Georgia Tech and No. 34 Florida State.
