Texas lineman pledges to Commodores

Steven Brent, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive lineman from Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas, verbally committed Monday to play football for Vanderbilt, according to KTBC-TV in Austin, Texas.

In a news story published by the station's website, KTBC reports that Brent committed to Vandy after making an official visit over the past weekend. He becomes the ninth high school player to publicly commit to Coach Bobby Johnson's first recruiting class.

Brent had also been offered by SMU, according to KTBC, and had had a visit to Baylor set up for this weekend. He was rated the No. 78 overall prospect in Texas by Heartland Recruiting, a member of The Insiders network.

Brent also competes in the shot-put for the Georgetown Eagles track team, with a personal record of 57 feet 8 inches. He bench presses 320 pounds, squats 485 and powercleans 290.

Verbal commitments are not binding. Prospects are allowed to sign letters-of-intent on national signing day, February 6.
