With the recruiting efforts from the class of 2005 slowly winding down, the Blue Devils have turned their collective attention towards a few select prospects in hopes of finishing strong in what has been one of the best classes in Duke history. One name that would take a big step in that direction is one of Louisiana's best running backs. After tripping to all three finalists, Harris says he's got a pretty good idea of what he wants to do, but the in-home visits with Commodores and Blue Devils will likely be the missing piece when it comes to making a decision.
"I think it'll give me the last little bit of information I need from both of them. Once that's over I'll probably think about it for a little while and then commit."
So does that mean the No. 37 running back in the nation according to Scout.com will have an announcement sometime soon?
"I don't know at this point. I may just wait to announce it until signing day. I guess we'll see what happens."
Though he plays quarterback for his high school squad, Harris projects as a running back at the collegiate level. In fact he projects as the kind of player who can step in right away and help thanks to a mature frame and disciplined work ethic.
"That's one thing they said at Duke – that I'd have a chance to come in early and would be given a chance to earn a spot early on. They played a lot of freshmen this year, and they've been up front about how I'd fit in there."
So what are Harris' impressions of the Blue Devils at this point?
"They are turning things around and they have incredible academics. It's hard to beat a Duke degree. Vanderbilt has great academic side of things too. I've said from the start this is about what is best for me academically."
As a junior, Harris rushed for 1,480 yards and 33 touchdowns in Higgins' option-oriented offense at quarterback. Those numbers got him voted to the first team All-District and honorable mention All-State. He continued that tear during his senior season, rushing for close to 1,600 yards and 30 TDs.
In the classroom, Harris has already qualified, and carries a 3.98 GPA and has scored a 22 on the ACT.
