Baseball: Dores win second over VMI, 5-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior right-hander Jensen Lewis gave up just one hit and struck out nine in seven innings of play, and led #18 Vanderbilt to a 5-2 victory over VMI today at Hawkins Field. The final game of the three-game series is tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 pm. Tickets are $1.

Junior shortstop Warner Jones hit a two-run homerun in the seventh inning to break a 0-0 tie. VU scored three more runs in the fifth to improve to 2-0 on the season. VMI is now 1-7. Lewis allowed only three VMI players to reach base in the opening six innings, incuding two walks and one hit batter. The Keydets got their first hit of the game in the seventh when leadoff man Matt Smith hit a single to left field. He moved to second when Kelly Sweppenhiser drew a walk. Elliott Erbe advanced Smith and Sweppenhiser with a sacrifice bunt. With runners at second and third, Lewis struck out Robert Crumpler and Thane Smith to end the inning.

VMI's J.J. Hollenbeck had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. With one away, junior catcher Brian Hernandez got the first hit of the game with a single to center field. The inning ended when Tony Mansolino hit into a double play.

With the game scoreless in the seventh, Vanderbilt's offense got going. Antoan Richardson led off the inning with a double and Warner Jones followed with a two-run home run over the 35-foot left field wall. Mike Baxter reached after he was hit by a pitch and moved to third when Hernandez hit a double down the left field line. Mansolino singled scoring Baxter ending Hollenbeck's time on the mound. Mansolino stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Garza scoring Hernandez.. Matt Zeller then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Mansolino for a 5-0 Commodore lead. Hollenbeck left the game giving up five runs on five hits striking out five and walking one in six innings. Jeff DeMara replaced Hollenbeck and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings.

Michael Wagner took over for Lewis to begin the eighth inning and gave up one run in both the eigth and ninth innings. With two away in the eigth, Shane Geisslinger singled to center and moved to second when BT Good drew a walk. Matt Smith singled scoring Geisslinger before Sweppenhiser struck out to end the inning.

VMI added one run in the ninth when Elliott Erbe scored on a fielder's choice by Stephen Parsons. Erbe reached base on a walk; moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by Matt Smith.

Vanderbilt totaled six hits led by Richardson and Hernandez with two each. VMI had four hits.
