Baseball: Dores edge Boston College, 6-5

Nashville, Tenn. – Junior catcher Brian Hernandez hit a two-out double in the fifth inning that scored Warner Jones for the game winner tonight at Hawkins Field leading Vanderbilt to a 6-5 decision over Boston College in the Music City Classic. Junior left-hander Ryan Mullins (1-0) earned the win as he pitched six innings giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Mike Wlodarczyk (0-1) picked up the loss for Boston College giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He struck out two and walked two. Vanderbilt improves to 4-0, while Boston College owns a 0-1 record.

"It was a big hit," Hernandez said of his game-winner. "To tell you the truth, I couldn't even tell you what pitch it was. I was just happy to get the two-out hit."

With Vanderbilt leading 6-3 heading into the ninth, Boston College scored two runs before Commodore closer Ryan Rote came in to record his first save of the season. VU right-hander Michael Wagner pitched 2.2 innings giving up two runs on two hits before Rote entered the game.

"Overall, it was a good game for both sides," Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. "This was (Boston College's) first game and the way they swung the bat was really impressive."

The Eagles totaled eight hits, led by Ryan Hutchinson with three and Marco Albano with two.

Vanderbilt scored in the first inning when Aaron Garza crossed home on a passed ball. Garza reached on a walk, moved to second on a single bunt by Antoan Richardson and advanced to third on Mike Baxter's fly out to center. Boston College tied the game in the second when Jared McGuire scored on an Albano double to left field.

VU took a 3-1 lead in the fourth with runs from Tony Mansolino and Dominic De La Osa. Mansolino hit a single to third, moved to second on a passed ball and scored when De La Osa hit a single to left center field. De La Osa moved to second on a Bill Kleinschrodt fly out; stole third and scored on a Alex Feinberg ground out to the shortstop.

The Eagles tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with runs from Mike Flynn and Albano. VU added two more in their half of the inning, including Jones and Hernandez who scored on a Mansolino single.

"It's definitely a big win," Hernandez said. "I'm just glad we came out of here with a victory."

VU added one in the sixth when Garza hit a RBI single up the middle scoring Kleinshcrodt who singled and stole second.

The Commodores host Illinois State Saturday (Feb. 26) at noon at Hawkins Stadium in the Music City Classic. Tickets are $1.
