Vanderbilt holds off Lipscomb, 9-3

Nashville, Tenn. - Junior first baseman Mike Baxter hit two home runs, including a three-run home run in the third inning, to help lead #13 Vanderbilt to a 9-3 victory over Lipscomb today at Dugan Field. The Commodores remain undefeated at 7-0, while Lipscomb owns a 7-3 mark. The game was originally scheduled for yesterday, but was postponed until today because of snow flurries in the Nashville area.

The Commodores scored in five of the opening six innings. Vanderbilt scored in the first inning when freshman leadoff hitter Alex Feinberg doubled and scored on a Warner Jones single to left field. Feinberg went 2-3 in the contest and is 8-12 at the plate in four games.

Senior third baseman Tony Mansolino scored in the second inning when he led off with a walk; moved to second on a throwing error by Lipscomb third baseman Chris Conn; advanced to third on a Stephen Shao ground out and scored when Matt Zeller hit a single to right field.

Lipscomb scored one in the second inning to narrow the VU lead to one, 2-1. With two away, Conn singled to left field scoring Nick Bruning who drew a walk and moved to second on a Ryan Price single.

The Commodores extended their lead to 5-1 on Baxter's three-run home run in the third inning. Baxter took a 0-1 pitch over the right field fence scoring Antoan Richardson and Warner Jones who had both singled.

After a Bison pitching change to begin the fifth inning, Baxter took a 3-1 fastball over the left center field wall and Brian Hernandez scored on a Mansolino sacrifice fly to left field.

Vanderbilt added two more runs in the sixth inning for a 9-1 lead. Zeller led off the inning with a double, followed by a Feinberg single to right. Zeller scored on a Richardson sacrifice fly. Jones reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored when Baxter singled to right field for his fifth RBI of the day.

Lipscomb added two runs in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Ryan Rote. With one away, the Bisons collected three consecutive hits. David Becker and Patrick O'Rourke scored on a double by Matt Thomas before Rote struck out the final batter of the game.

Four Commodore pitchers saw action with Jeff Sues earning the win (2-0) going 3.0 innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Greg Moviel pitched three innings and gave up two hits and struck out four. Freshman left-hander Cameron Betourne saw his first action as a Commodore and pitched a solid inning with just one hit and a strikeout. Rote pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs on four hits and struck out five.

The Commodores host Ball State (4-1) this weekend for a three-game series at Hawkins Field. Friday's game is scheduled for 4 pm with left-hander Ryan Mullins (1-0) on the mound. Saturday's game is 2 pm and Sunday's game is 1 pm.
