LSU bursts Vanderbilt's bubble, 81-69

BATON ROUGE, La.-- Antonio Hudson scored 25 points and Brandon Bass added 20 as LSU held off a second half Vanderbilt rally and defeated the Commodores, 81-69. The loss dealt a critical blow to Vanderbilt's NCAA tournament hopes. The Commodores must now make an impressive SEC tournament showing in order to garner any NCAA attention.

Julian Terrell, who finished with 21 points, got Vanderbilt on the board first just 30 seconds into the game. A Brandon Bass lay-up put LSU on top, 7-4 with 15:50 remaining in the half.

Terrell's jumper just 10 minutes before halftime tied the score at 12.

Tack Minor's lay-up with 5 minutes remaining broke an 18-18 tie and ignited an 18-2 LSU run which would give the Tigers a seemingly insurmountable 36-20 halftime lead.

Vanderbilt caught on fire early in the second half. Steals by Vanderbilt's Corey Smith, Julian Terrell and Mario Moore helped ignite a 17-6 Vanderbilt run which cut the LSU lead to 5 at 42-37 with 16 minutes remaining in the game.

Mario Moore's 3-point shot brought the Commodores to to within one of the Tigers at 48-47 with 12:41 remaining. Moore, who made 6 of 11 three-point shots, finished with 30 points to lead Vanderbilt in scoring.

Darrel Mitchell's 3-point shot put the Tigers back up by 8 with 10:45 remaining. Vanderbilt would never pull to within less than seven points of LSU from that point on. Mitchell finished with 16 points for the Tigers.

LSU improves to 19-8 (12-4 SEC) with the win. The Tigers finish the regular season tied with Alabama for the SEC West lead. LSU will next face the winner of the Auburn-Vanderbilt game in the SEC tournament. Vanderbilt falls to 18-12 (8-8 SEC) with the loss. The Commodores can still earn an NCAA bid by winning two or more games in the SEC tournament. Top Stories
