The Vanderbilt Commodores matched the 2000-01 season's SEC win total with a 68-63 win over the LSU Tigers in Memorial Gym Wednesday evening.  With seven conference games remaining in the 2001-02 season the Commodores are now 4-5.   The Commodores finished the 2000-01 SEC season 4-12.

LSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Chuck Moore got things going for Vandy with a 3-pointer about 2 minutes into the game to make the score LSU 5 Vandy 3.  The lead would go on to change 8 times in the first half with LSU leading by as many as 6 and Vanderbilt leading by as many as 4.

A 3-pointer by Vanderbilt's Brendan Plavich just before the half put the 'Dores up by 3 at 30 to 27.  LSU's Ronald Dupree scored on a jumper with just one second remaining in the half to make the half time score Vanderbilt 30 LSU 29.

A jumper by LSU's Thomas Davis less than a minute into the second half allowed the Tigers to regain the lead at 31-30.   The Tigers would hold that lead for a very long time, but not long enough.  LSU led from the 19:44 point until the 2:12 mark when a 3-pointer by Brendan Plavich knotted the score at 60-60.   Plavich finished the game making 4 of 6 3-pointers.

After a lay up by Chuck Moore, Russell Lakey, who has been sidelined much of the season with injuries, hit a 3-point shot to give Vandy a 65-60 lead.  After a series of missed opportunities and missed free throws by both teams, Chuck Moore made two free throws after being fouled by Antonio Hudson.   The Commodores held on to win 68-63.

For the game Vanderbilt hit an outstanding 11-22 from 3-point range; 24-51 from field goal range; and 9-13 from the free throw line.   LSU managed 27-53 from field goal range; 5-15 from 3-point range and 4-11 from the line.

Vanderbilt was led in scoring by Brendan Plavich and Chuck Moore. Each had 18 points and 4 3-pointers made.  LSU was led in scoring by Ronald Dupree with 13.   The Tigers out rebounded Vandy by 10, 36-26.  Vanderbilt won the turnover battle, committing just 10 to LSU's 16.

After the game, Commodore head coach Kevin Stallings had this to say about the return of Russell Lakey to the lineup: "I guess I'll go ahead and say it before someone asks. Now you know why we've missed Russell Lakey. He made a dramatic difference in the game tonight. I question whether we would have won the game without him. He's a great competitor. I've never had a guy injured and out as long as he's been out who's played as well as he has so quickly. He's come back to practice and gotten on guys that need it and encouraged guys that need encouraging. He's a terrific leader for this team. It sure is nice to have him back."

Vanderbilt next travels to Kentucky on Saturday to face the Wildcats in Rupp Arena.  Vanderbilt has never won in that venue against the cats.
