Commodores land 20 on signing day

On the first national signing day of his career as Vanderbilt head coach, Bobby Johnson received signed letters-of-intent from 20 high school players.

Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson announced the receipt of national letters-of-intent from 20 high school football players, members of his first signing class, at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

On the first national signing day of his career as Vanderbilt's coach, Johnson announced the names at a press conference in the newly renovated weight room at McGugin Center. Fans and former players were invited to be part of the announcement ceremony.

"We didn't get every one we wanted," said Johnson, "but we wanted every one we got."

The signing class included one eleventh-hour commitment-- Funtaine Hunter, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound safety prospect from Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga. It did not, however, include offensive lineman Brett Tobin of Green Bay, Wisc. (who signed instead with Virginia) or defensive end Antoine Morgan of Bennettsville, S.C. (who is still expected to sign with Vanderbilt).

Of the group, 11 were listed as offensive players and seven were listed as defensive players (although many played on both offense and defense in high school). The group also included a punter (Greg Johnson of Lilburn, Ga.) and a placekicking specialist (Patrick Johnson of Athens, Ala.).

The group also included three players from Middle Tennessee: Richard Freeman, a defensive end from Brentwood; Erik Davis, a receiver from Nashville's Ezell-Harding Christian School; and Blake Luker, an offensive lineman from Collinwood.
