Women's Tennis Scores 5-2 Win Over Texas A&M

The No. 2 Vanderbilt women's tennis team recorded their nation-leading 13th win of the season, defeating No. 19 Texas A&M 5-2 Friday at the Currey Tennis Center. It was the Commodores' ninth win of the year over a ranked opponent.

The Commodores opened up a 1-0 lead when they captured the doubles point. The team of Sarah Riske (McMurray, Pa.) and Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield, Mo.) won at No. 1 before the team of Kate Burson (Washington, D.C.) and Annie Menees (St. Louis, Mo.) clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2. In singles play, the Commodores opened up a 3-0 with straight set wins by Kelly Schmandt (Santa Barbara, Calif.) at No. 2 and Riske at No. 1. Burson then clinched the match for the Commodores with her straight set win at No. 3. Katie Blaszak (Fairfax, Va.) added to the Vanderbilt advantage with her three set win at No. 4 before Texas A&M won the final two singles matches to make the final score 5-2.

"I was pleased with our play today," said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald, who was coaching his 200th match for the Commodores. "We beat a good team in Texas A&M and I hope we can continue to improve with each match."

Vanderbilt (13-1) returns to action on Sunday as they host No. 34 Illinois at 10:00 a.m. at the Currey Tennis Center.
