Men's Hoops: USC hammers Vanderbilt

The South Carolina Gamecocks left no doubt who was the worst team in the SEC East Saturday when they thrashed Vanderbilt 66-43 in Memorial Gym.

Saturday against South Carolina it seemed as though it was one of those games when the 'Dores couldn't even throw the ball in the ocean, much less make a basket. All in all, it was probably one of the worst performances ever by a Commodore basketball team. The 43 points by the Commodores was the lowest offensive output by Vanderbilt since 1988 when it scored just 39 against the LSU Tigers in Memorial Gym.

The key to the loss was terrible shooting by the men in black and gold. Brendan Plavich led the way with a pathetic 0-6 from 3-point land. Most of those misses came in the first half. Then there was Matt Freije who managed just 1 of 4 three pointers. Jason Holwerda and Corey Smith both were 0 of 2 from behind the arc. Only Chuck Moore managed greater than 50%. Chuck went 3 of 6 for the day.

Meanwhile, the Gamecocks Jamel Bradley managed to connect on 4 of 9 threes to lead the 'Cocks in scoring with 14.

Vanderbilt came out in the first half raining three point shots on USC. However, only 2 of 15 connected. The game was already out of hand by half time with Vandy trailing 38-20 at the break.

The second half was little more than a repeat of the first half. The 'Dores continued to miss everything they threw up.

After the game, Commodore coach Kevin Stallings had this to say: "Well, I'm probably about as disappointed as I've ever been about the way my team played. It should not be possible for me and my coaching staff to put a team out there that performed the way we did. South Carolina was just better in every way than us. They just had better purpose and better energy than we did. We're just not playing well, and it's my responsibility to get them playing better."

It wasn't just the shots that weren't falling for Vandy either. Vanderbilt was out rebounded 42-30, had 5 shots blocked by South Carolina, and gave up 8 steals compared to just 3 steals by Vandy.

The loss was a devastating one for a Commodore team that had entertained dreams of slipping into the NIT for maybe even the NCAA. Those dreams will now be contingent on Vanderbilt winning out the season and making a strong run in the SEC Tournament.

With the loss, Vanderbilt fall to 14-11 overall and 4-8 in the SEC.

Things don't get any easier for the Commodores. Wednesday Mississippi State comes to town.
